Israel, considered by many as 'The Holy Land' is located in the Middle East and borders Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Mediterranean Sea. Israel includes the West Bank and the Gaza Strip which are administrated in part by the Palestinian National Authority and shares the Dead Sea with Jordan.

Israel has a population of over 7.2 million people. Israel is the world's only Jewish State and over 80% of the population are Jews. There is also a Muslim minority and very small followings of Christian and Druze religions. The official language spoken in Israel is Hebrew but the Arab population speak Arabic. English is the most commonly spoken foreign language. Other languages such as Spanish, French and German are also spoken.

Jerusalem is the nations capital and largest city and is situated in the Judean Mountains. Jerusalem is home to over 730,000 people. Haram ash-Sharif or Temple Mount is the most famous site in Israel. Situated in Jerusalem, this stone platform was built over the Mt Moriah, noted in the bible as the place where Abraham was told to sacrifice his son Issac. This is also the site of Solomon's First and Herod's Second Temples. This is one of Jerusalem's holiest places for Muslims as well as Christians and Jews as this is where the Prophet Mohammad's night journey took place.

Israel experiences a temperate Mediterranean climate with long summers and mild winters. Summer begins in April and continues on until October and are more humid along the Mediteranean coast and dry within the central highlands. July and August are the warmest months to visit with temperaturs going as high as 33 degrees. Rain is also rare during the summer months. Winter begins in November finishing in March. January is the coolest month with averages of 6 to 15 degrees. Rainfall can be heavier in the northern parts with averages of 35 inches while in the south the average is 1.2 inches.

Israel which is officially known as the State of Israel and Eretz Yisrael in Hebrew can be found in Southwest Asia with a total area of 20,770 square kilometres which includes 440 square kilometres of water. Israel has an coastline that runs for 273 kilometres along the Mediterranean Sea. Israel is split into four main regions of the Mediterranean Coastal Plain, the Central Hills, the Jordan Rift Valley and the Negev Desert.

Covering of 13,000 square kilometres of Israel is the Negev desert, which is over half of Israel. Negev in Hebrew means 'dry' and is split into five different ecological regions. These are known as the Northern , Western and Central Negev, the High Pateau and the Arava Valley. Also found in Israel is the Jordan River which is known by many as one of the world's most sacred rivers. It flows for over 251 metres and is shared by Jordan, Palestinian Authority and Israel. Israel's highest point rises to over 1,208 metres and is known as Har Meron in Hebrew and can also be referred to as Mount Meron. Israel's lowest point is the Dead Sea at 408 metres below sea level.

The economy of Israel is very strong and is amongst some of the most advanced countries in the Middle East. The economy is highly dependant on imports of crude oil, grains, raw materials and military equipment. The agricultural industry in particulary low with a contribution of just over 2 percent while employing over 18 percent of the population. Israel is mostly self sufficient in most agrucultural products with the main produces being citrus, vegetables, cotton, beef, poultry and dairy products. The service industry is the most important contributor to the economy with a contribution of over 67 percent. The main exports of Israel are machinery and equipment, software, cut diamonds, agriculural products, chemicals, textiles and apparel. The official currency of Israel is the New Israeli Shekel.
