Hiroshima

General Information about Hiroshima

Hiroshima is best known throughout the world as being the first city in history to be attacked by an atomic bomb. The city is located on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in the west of the island of Honshu, the largest in Japan. Hiroshima is situated in the Chugoka region of Japan about 300 kilometres north east of Nagaskai and 680 kilometres west of Japan's capital city Tokyo. After World War II and the atomic bomb attack, Hiroshima recovered well and is now home to more than 1.1 million people.

The city was founded in 1589 and consequently has many historic sites to see such as Hiroshima Castle, Shukkei-en, Mitaki-dera and the Fudoin Temple. Other popular places to visit in the city include Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims and the Children's Peace Monument.

Hiroshima Castle, sometimes referred to as Carp Castle, was constructed by Mori Terumoto in 1589. At that time there was no Hiroshima city or town, and the area was called Gokumara. After the castle was completed Terumoto named the area Hiroshima and governed from the castle. In 1600 Hiroshima Castle became home to Fukushima Masanori who forced Terumoto out of the castle. Later in the 1600's it was used as a military facility. Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic blast in 1945 and rebuilt in 1958.

There are many memorials located in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park which is dedicated to the legacy of Hiroshima as the first city to be attacked by an atomic bomb. The A-Bomb Dome is the most easily recognised symbol of Hiroshima and is the skeleton of the former Industrial Promotion Hall. The Dome is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has been officially designated a site of memory for the bombing catastrophe. More than 140,000 people had died by the end of 1945 as a result of the atomic bomb attack. The memorial cenotaph at the centre of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park states the names of all the victims of the bombing. This was one of the first memorial monuments to be built concerning the bomb attack and was constructed in 1952. The arch above is to symbolise shelter for the souls of the victims.
