Kyoto

General Information about Kyoto

Located in the centre of the island of Honshu in Japan lies Kyoto, the former Imperial capital of the nation between 794 and 1868. Kyoto is situated 372 kilometres south west of Japan's capital city Tokyo and is home to almost 1.5 million people, making it the seventh largest city in Japan. Kyoto is often regarded as Japan's most beautiful city and is the cultural centre of the nation, with more than 1600 Buddhist Temples, 400 Shinto shrines and many gardens and palaces. Seventeen of these gardens and structures have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Some of the most famous temples in Kyoto include Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaka-ji, Ginkaka-ji, Ryoan-ji, Nansen-ji and Hogan-ji. Of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyoto, the Kamigamo Shrine, Shimogamo Shrine and Nijo Castle are very popular places to visit. The Kyoto Imperial Palace, Sento Imperial Palace, Katsura Imperial Villa and Shugaku-in Imperial Villa are other popular attractions, especially for those with an interest of the Imperial family.

One of the most recognised sites in the city is the Buddhist temple Kiyomizu-dera which is located in the east of Kyoto. The buildings which stand on the site today were constructed in 1633, though the original temple dates back to 798. The Kiyomizu temple complex houses many shrines, most famously Jishu-jinja, dedicated to the god of love and good matches, Okuninushino-Mikoto. A pair of 'love-stones' are situated at the shrine, placed 18 metres apart, for visitors to walk between with their eyes closed. If the task is successful it is believed that the person will find love.

Another of Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and popular attractions in the Nijo Castle which was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate, who used the building as a residence for himself and his successors. Construction of the castle was completed in 1626 then enlarged by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu, who also built the five storey castle tower. During the 18th century this part of the Nijo Castle was destroyed by fire. The buildings which stand in it's place today were moved from the Imperial Palace during the early 1890's.
