Osaka

General Information about Osaka

Osaka is located on Japan's main island Honshu and is one of the most visited cities in Japan, sometimes referred to as the nation's second most important city. Osaka is situated at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay, about 400 kilometres south west of Japan's capital city Tokyo, 45 kilometres south of Kyoto and 280 kilometres east of Hiroshima. Osaka has a night time population of 3.6 million people which swells to 3.7 million during the day.

With a history dating back to the 5th century BC, Osaka has many historical sites such as Osaka Castle, Sanko Shrine, Mitami Shrine, Shitenno-ji and Sumiyoshi Taisha. There are also many other popular attractions such as Universal Studios Japan, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, Tennoji Zoo and the Tenjinbashi-suji shopping arcade.

The Osaka Castle is Osaka's most famous landmark. It was originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi between 1583 and 1586 and modeled after the Azuchi Castle of Oda Nobunaga. The castle was first restored and reconstructed in 1620 by Tokugawa Hidetada after he overthrew Toyotomi Hideyori, Hideyoshi's son, during battle which caused the castle significant damage. Osaka Castle was damaged further in 1665 by a lightning strike, in 1843 by fire due to civil conflict and in 1954 during bombing raids of the city. Today's Osaka Castle is a 1930's reconstruction of the original building, but the walls built in the 1620's still stand.

Universal Studios Japan is one of Osaka's most famous attractions. This is one of the three Universal Studios Theme Parks and was opened in 2001. The park is split into nine different areas New York, Hollywood, San Francisco, Jurrasic Park, Snoopy Studios, Lagoon, Water World, Amity Village and Land of Oz. Universal Studios Japan features many popular cimema themed rides such as Jurassic Park - The Ride, E.T. Adventure, Back to the Future and the Hollywood Dream rollercoaster.
