SapporoGeneral Information about SapporoSapporo is located 830 kilometres north east of Tokyo, on Japan's second largest island Hokkaido. The city is situated on the south west part of the Ishikari Plain, on part of the Toyohira River which stems from the Ishikari River. Officially 'born' in 1868, Sapporo is a relatively new city and was once the administrative and defense capital of Hokkaido Island. As some of Honshu Island's population migrated to Sapporo in the 1870's and 1880's the city expanded. Today Sapporo is the fifth largest city in Japan and is home to more than 1.8 million people. Sapporo is known internationally as being the host of the 1972 Winter Olympics and the original site of the Sapporo Brewery.
The city has many interesting sites and places to visit such as the Sapporo Clock Tower, Hokkaido Jingu, Sapporo TV Tower, Sapporo Beer Museum, Ishiya Chocolate Factory, Pioneer Village, Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art and Sapporo Winter Sports Museum.
Hokkiado Jingu, or Hokkaido Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in Sapporo's Maruyama Park. The shrine holds four kami (spirits within objects) including the soul of Emperor Meiji who ruled between 1867 and 1912. The three original kami which were enshrined were Okunitama, Okuninushi and Sukunahikona. This took place in Tokyo in 1869. They were later relocated to Sapporo by officers of the Hokkiado Prefecture government. The shrine which stands today was constructed in 1871 and restored in 1978 after it suffered fire damage in 1974.
The Sapporo Beer Museum is the only beer Museum in Japan. This building was constructed in 1890 by the Sapporo Sugar Company and used as a sugar factory. In 1903 the Sapporo Beer Company purchased the factory and converted it to a brewery. This operated until 1965. The building officially opened as the Sapporo Beer Museum in 1982 and became a Hokkaido Heritage Site in 2004. The museum has three floors and tours are available. Displays include beer bottles, signs, posters, beer brewing instruments and information on those who were involved in Sapporo's beer industry. The Sapporo Beer Museum also houses a museum bar where guests can sample alcoholic Sapporo Beer products. Hostels in SapporoBelow are a selection of Hostels located in Sapporo, Japan.
