General Information about Tokyo

Tokyo is the capital and largest city of Japan in Asia and in situated in the south east of the nation on the largest of Japan's islands, Honshu. Tokyo was originally known as Edo and started off as a small fishing village in the 1400's. By the 18th century the city was one of the largest cities in the world and had a population of over one million people. During this time the city became the capital of Japan. Much of the city was destroyed during World War II but recovered quickly and hosted the 1964 Olympic Games. Today Tokyo has a population of over 12.7 million people.

Being one of the largest and most technologically advanced cities in the world, Tokyo has many attractions, places of interest and theme parks. The most popular theme parks in the city are Tokyo Disneyland, Kabukicho and Tokyo Joyopolis. Other main attractions in the city include Toshogu and Hie-Jinja.

Tokyo Disneyland is the most popular and most visited attraction in Tokyo. This was the first Disney park to be built outside the United States of America and opened in April 1983. Tokyo Disneyland consists of seven 'worlds' and a large variety of Disney themed rides including Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Tours, Space Mountain and the world famous It's A Small World.

The Toshogu shrine constructed in 1591 is one of the oldest buildings in the city and is one of few remaining Edo structures. The original shrine was founded here in 1627 and dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Toshogu shrine features a pathway lined with 256 stone and bronze lanterns (gifts from various Daimyos), the Main Shrine, the five storey Kennei-ji Temple and the Kara-mon Gate.
