Kazakhstan

General Information about Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is located in central Asia and bordered by Russia, China, Krygyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzebekistan and the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world and has a population of over 15,200,000 people. Russian is the official language spoken in Kazakhstan and is spoken by 95% of the population. Kazakh, a state language, is also widely spoken throughout the country. The two primary religions followed in Kazakhstan are Sunni Muslim and Russian Orthodox. 30% of Kazakhstanis are of Russian ethnicity.

Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan which is located in the central north of the country. The Kozha Akhmed Yasaui Mausoleum is a popular place to visit in Kazakhstan. The mausoleum was constructed in the 1390's at the place of the Turkic poets tomb. Kazakhstan also has the Almatinsky Nature Reserve which is home to rare animal species such as the Snow Leopard.

Kazakhstan's climate is mainly continental with hot summers and cold winters. The best months for visiting Kazakhstan is from April through to June as well as September and October, the days are usually cool during these months. January is the coldest month to visit the norther parts with temperatures going as low as -19 degrees, while in the south temperatures are slightly warmer with averages of minus one. July is one of the warmest months with averages of 20 degrees with the south sitting on a warmer 29 degrees.

Kazakhstan is a landlocked country and is an extremly large country measuring over 2,717,300 square metres and is almost double the size of Alaska. Kazakhstan shares the Ural River with Russia that covers a total length of 1,509 metres. In the north of Kazakhstan inbetween Karakalpakstan is the Aral Sea which is a landlocked endorheic sea that covers a total area of 17,160 square kilometres. Unfortunately due to heavy polution the sea has shrunk by over 25 percent since the 1960's. The Caspian Sea can also be found along the border of Kazakhstan and is the world's largest enclosed body of water. Kazakhstan shares the Caspisan Sea with Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, and the Russian Federation. The highest peak in Kazakhstan is Pik Khan Tengri which means 'Lord of the Spirits' or 'Lord of the Sky' and rises to over 7,010 metres. The lowest point is Vpadina Kaundy and is 132 metres below sea level.

Kazakhstan has a very sucessful economy and is highly rich in fossil fuel reserves as well as large quantities of minerals and metals. Kazakhstan's industry sector is very important to the economy and contributes over 40 percent of the economy. The main industry exports are oil and oil products, ferrous metals, chemicals, machinery, and coal. Kazakhstan has one of the largest economy's in Central Asia and is in the top ten countries isn the Asia-Pacific region and is 60.5 percent financially free since 2007. Kazakhstan's official currency is the Tenge.
