Karaganda

General Information about Karaganda

With a population of almost half a million people, Karaganda is the fourth largest city in Kazakhstan. The city is located in the north east of Kazakhstan, about 195 kilometres south east of the nation's capital city Astana. In the 1940's most of Karaganda's population were German who were deported by Stalin when Hitler invaded Poland. Many of the deportees were interned in labour camps until the 1950's. Karaganda was the home city of Kazakhstan's World War II hero Nurken Abdirov and was also the birthplace of Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov.

There are two main areas of Karaganda - the Old Town and the New Town. Old Town is labeled on city maps as Karaganda, though barely anything remains there as the town was abandoned after the Soviets undermined it. The main part of Karaganda was then moved south several kilometres.

The main places to visit in Karaganda are the water park, movie theatre, Stanislavskiy Theatre, Karaganda Cathedral, Karaganda Mosque and the Karaganda Museum.
