MombasaGeneral Information about MombasaMombasa is east Africa's oldest settlement and the second largest city of Kenya. The city is situated on the coast of the Indian Ocean, about 530 kilometres south east of Kenya's capital city Nairobi, on Mombasa Island. The island is seperated from the mainland of Kenya by two creeks, the Tudor Creek and Kilindini Harbour. The city of Mombasa is believed to be more than 2500 years old, and is currently home to more than 707,000 people.
The city of Mombasa has many interesting places to visit which hold significant historical importance such as Fort Jesus, the Gede Ruins and Old Town. Other popular places to visit in the city include the Mombasa Tusks, Hindu Temple and Mamba Village. There are also various mosques throughtout Mombasa. Some of the most well known are Mandhry Mosque, Memon Mosque and the Basheikh Mosque.
Fort Jesus is the most popular attraction in Mombasa. It was built by the Portuguese in 1593 by order of King Philip II of Spain, who was the ruler of the Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms in Mombasa at that time. Fort Jesus was built in the dshape of a man and designed by Italian architect Cairati. Between 1631 and 1875, Fort Jesus was won and lost nine times by those trying to gain control of Mombasa. Today the partially ruined Fort Jesus contains a museum which features a large collection of pottery and ceramics which were discovered in the area. Also in the museum is the Santo Antonio de Tanna, which sank off Port Jesus in 1698.
Mombasa's Old Town was constructed when the Portuguese controlled the area, and features houses with carved doors and balconies, both of which are common in east African architecture. The Arab population also had a heavy influence of the town and today most inhabitants of Old Town are Arab or of Arab descent. Old Town is a famous part of Mombasa, known for it's ancient buildings, art works and shops which sell Kenyan antiques and souvenirs.
