General Information about Nairobi

Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya in Africa and is commonly referred to as 'The Green City in the Sun', although the name Nairobi cames from the Maasai phrase 'Enkare Nairobi' which translates to 'the place of cool waters' in english. Nairobi is situated in the south of Kenya on the Nairobi Rver and is home to over 2 million people. Nairobi was founded in 1899 and became Kenya's capital city in 1905.

There are many places of interest to visit in Nairobi including the Nairobi National Park, the Karen Blixen Museum, the Bomas of Kenya, the Giraffe Centre, Safari Park, Snake Park and the National Museum of Kenya.

The Karen Blixen Museum was the home of Karen Blixen, author of the novel Out Of Africa. This farmhouse is where she lived between 1914 and 1931, before leaving Kenya due to personal tragedies. At the time Karen Blixen occupied the house it was situated amongst a coffee plantation. Today it is surrounded by gardens.

The Karen Blixten Museum was donated to the Kenyan Government by the Danish at independence and was opened to the public in 1986. The National Museum of Kenya, formerly the Coryndon Museum, houses many artifacts including the full remains of a homo erectus boy, who is belived to have lived up to 2 million years ago.

One of the most important historical sites in Nairobi is the Jomo Kenyatta mausoleum. Jomo Kenyatta was the first Prime Minister, then President of Kenya and is considered Kenya's founding father. Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is also named in his honour.
