General Information about Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is located in central Asia and is landlocked by Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzebekistan. Over 5,200,000 people live in Kyrgyzstan with around 900,000 living in Kyrgyzstan's capital city Bishkek. Kyrgyzstan's second largest city is Osh and is rumoured to be older then Rome. The offiical languages of Kyrgyzstan are Kyrgyz and Russian. Kyrgyz is more commonly spoken. 75% of the Kyrgyzstani population follow Islamic beliefs. Around 26% of Kyrgyzstani's are of Uzebek or Russian ethnicity.

Kyrgyzstan's main attractions are it's beautiful lakes, mountains and glaciers. This is the perfect country for skiing, climbing and trekking amongst other activities. The Ala-Archa Canyon and the Issyk-Kul Lake are both popular places to visit to see Kyrgyzstan's nature and wildlife.

Kyrgyzstan's climate is usually effected by its high altitude and continental type conditions with hot summers and cool winters. Because of this the climate can vary from region to region with areas in the north experiencing a more temperate climate while in the south the conditions are more subtropic like. Kyrgyzstan enjoys over 240 days of sunshine each year with small amounts of rainfalling. Winters are cool with heavy snowfalls with aveages of minus 20 up in the highlands, while in the lowlands its a milder minus four. January is the warmest month to visit with averages of 24 degrees.

Kyrgyzstan which is officially known as the Kyrgyz Republic announced it's independence from the Soviet Union back in 1991 has a total landmass of 198,500 square kilometres which includes 7,200 square kilometres of water. Kygyzstan is the smallest state in the Central Asian states. Also found in Kyrgyzstan is the Tian Shan range which means 'Celestial Mountains' and covers over sixty percent of Kygystan's countryside. The Tian Shan range extends into India, Pakistan, and China which also shares the highest point of the Tian Shan Mountain range with Kyrgyzstan. Known as Jengish Chokusu measures over 7,439 metres and is the 16th highest mountain in the world. The lowest point in Kyrgyzstan is Kara-daryya and is only 132 metres high.

Economy

Kyrgyzstan's economy is not very strong and has suffered greatly from its seperation from the Soviet Union. The agricultural industry is heavily relied upon with over 55 percent of the population being involved in the industry. Only 33 percent of the agricultural industry goes into the economoy of Kyrgyzstan with cotton, tobacco, wool and meat being the main produces. The service industry provides over 46 percent while employing just 30 percent of the population. Kyrgyzstan has a very high unemployment rate of 18 percent with approximately 40 percent of the population living below the poverty line. The official currency of Kyrgyzstan is the Kyrgyzstani Som.
