LaosGeneral Information about LaosLoas is located in southeast Asia and is landlocked between Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and China. Laos is a fairly isolated country so this is the perfect country to experience the traditional southeast Asian lifestyle. Laos has a population of around 6,500,000 people with over 730,000 of these people living in Laos' capital city Vientiane which is situated on the Mekong River. Lao is the official langauge of Laos but French, English and some other ethnic languages are also spoken throughtout the country. The majority of the population of Laos follow a Buddist way of life.
Vientiane is home to the Pha That Luang monument. This is the most important landmark of Laos as it symbolises Lao sovereignty and the Buddist religion. Vientiane also has the Patuxai which has been likened to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. The Patuxai was built in the 1960's, is made of cement and consists of four archways. ClimateFind Out About The Climate In LaosLaos experiences a typical tropical monsoon type climate with three main seasons. The wet season begins in May lasting until October with monsoons being common during this period. Laos can experience as much as 90 inches during monsoon season along with averages of 27 degrees. Things start to dry up in November with mild weather conditions lasting until April, although expect to see a few monsoons coming in from the north east. December through to February are the coolest months with lows of 16 degrees. March and April are the best months to visit for warm weather with averages of 32 degrees. GeographyGeographical Information On LaosLaos which can be found in Southeastern Asia was originaly under the control of Thailand which was known as Siam back in the 1800's is over 236,800 square kilometres with 6,000 square kilometres included in this. Laos official name is Lao People's Democratic Republic who was taken out of Thailands control by the French in the mid 1900s announced their independence back in 1975. Most of the terrain in Laos is rugged and mountainous with some plains and plateaus. The higest peak in Laos is Phou Bia which measures over 2,817 metres while the lowest peak of Mekong River is only 70 metres. EconomyLearn About The Economy In LaosThe agricultural industry in Laos is the main support of income with over 80 percent of the population being employed. Over 42 percent of the economy comes from the agricultural industry with the main exports being coffee while tea, tobacco, cotton and rice and amongst the main produces. Laos has over 30 percent of its population living below the poverty line with only 2.4 percent being unemployed. To this day the infrastructure of Laos is poor with a poor railroad system, limited telecommunications both internal and external. Electricity is only available in a few urban areas.
