General Information about Lebanon

Lebanon is small mountainous country located in the Middle East and is bordered by Syria, Israel and the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon has a population of over 4 million people. The official language spoken in Lebanon is Arabic, but French regarded as a secong language. English is also widely spoken. The Lebanese population are almost equally split religiously between Islam and Christianity.

Lebanon's capital and largest city is Beirut which is located near the cost of the Mediterranean Sea and has a population of 1.2 million people. Beirut is very popular to visit and claims to be the party capital of the Middle East.

Lebanon has many ancient cities and archaeological sites as well as ski resorts and beautiful architecture. One of the most popular archaeological sites is Aanjar, Lebanon's best preserved Islamic sites. This is the only significant Umayyad site in Lebanon and found here are the impressive remains of the great palace. The Beiteddine Palace is another popular attraction. Beiteddine, or The House Of Faith, is the name of both the village and palace inside. Construction on the palace started in 1788 by Italian architects but wqas not completed for another 30 years. The palace has many Byzantine mosaics from the ancient city of Porphyrion. Sadly, most of the palace's rare and precious contents were destroyed during the Israeli invasion.

Lebanon experiences a typical Mediterranean sub-tropical climate with hot dry summers and pleasant rainy winters. The climate of Lebanon can varies from region to region with the mountains, valleys and the eastern hills receiving more rainfall. Summer begins in June and continues on through to September with hot and humid days. During this period temperatures can go as high as 32 degrees i some parts. Winters are cold in Lebanon with snow falling and frosts occurring regulary. Snow does cover the highest peaks on Lebanon for most parts of the year. Most of the country's rainfall occurs during November through to March and from December up until January with as much as 35 inches along the coast.

Lebanon which is officially known as the Republic of Lebanon or the Lebanese Republic borders along the Mediterranean Sea with a coastline of over 225 metres. Set in the Middle East Lebanon measures just 10,400 square kilometres which includes 170 square kilometres of water. Lebanon and is separated by the Bekaa Valley and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains which is a mountain range that is situated on the north west between Lebanon and Syria. The highest point of Levanon rises to over 3,088 metres and is known as Qurnat as Sawda'. Also referred to as Mount Lebanon this amazing mountain range is well known for its oak and pine forests and attracts many visitors each year.

Lebanon's economy greatly affected by the civil war of 1975 to 1990 which resulted in the county's infrastructure being serverly damaged but has since worked hard at rebuilding itself financially and physically. The agricultural industry only offers just over five percent of the economy while the service industry offers over 18 percent. The main industry trades are banking, tourism, food processing, wine, jewelry, cement, mineral and chemicals products. The service industry is the most important contributor to the economy for Lebanon with a support of over 70 percent of the economy. The main exports of Lebanon are authentic jewelry, inorganic chemicals, miscellaneous consumer goods, tabacco, electric power machinery as well as textile fibres and paper. The official currency of Lebanon is the Lebanese Pound.
