Macau

General Information about Macau

Macau is loacted in eastern Asia bordering China on the north and the South China Sea elsewhere. Macau, like Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. Macau has a population of just under 500,000 people. Almost the total population are of Chinese ethnicity.

The official language spoken in Macau is Cantonese which 88% of the population speak but there are also some other Chinese dialects spoken. 50% of Macau's population are Buddist.
Macau has been likened to the USA's Las Vegas as it boasts many casinos, bars, theatres and clubs but there are still many traditional sites to see. The most famous place to visit in Macau are the ruins of Saint Paul's Church. Sometimes considered as the greatest Christian monument in Asia, all that is left of Saint Paul's Church (built in the 17th cenutry) is the facade and stairway.

Macau experiences a typical subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The humidity levels in Macau are generally high but is generaly low in autumn. The autumn months of October through to December are the best months to visit with warm sunny days and of course low humidity. If you are visiting during May and September be prepared to experience some rainstorms and thunderstorms as this is the wet season. Visiting during July, August and September should be taken with care as typhoons are common during this period. Average temperatures in July sit around 28 degrees while January is the coolest month with averages of 14 degrees with conditions rarely going below five degrees. The average annual temperature in Macau is a pleasant 22 degrees.

Macau which is officially known in Chinese as Aomen Tebie Xingzhengqu which means Macau Special Administrative Region is a small country of only 28.2 square kilometres with a coastline of only 41 kilometres. Macau borders on the Pearl River Delta which flows into the South China Sea and the Guangdong Province which is set on the southern coast of China. Originally an island Macau eventually connected to a sandbar that over time turned into a narrow isthmus which resulted in Macau no longer being an island but a peninsula. The terrain of Macau is mostly flat and the highest point in Macau is Coloane Alto which measures 172.4 metres.

The economy of Macau was greatly affected by the Asian financial crisis and global downturn back in 2001 but has since improved its economy by the introduction of the gaming industry in the same year. The tourism and gaming industry are a huge support to the economy which increased public work expenditures. The service industry in Macau contributes most to the economy with a staggering 92 percent. The agricultural industry is very low mainly because only two percent of the land is cultivated. The unemployment rate in Macau is at low 4.4 percent since 2004 and the official currency is the Pataca.
