Antananarivo

General Information about Antananarivo

Antananarivo is the capital and largest city of the island nation of Madagascar which belongs to the African continent. Antananarivo is also known as it's French name Tananarive or it's colonial shorthand name Tara. Antananarivo is situated close to the centre of Madagascar and has a population of over 1.4 million people.

The city of Antananarivo has been rebuilt since the introduction of stone and brick construction methods. Today the city features many structures of architectural interest such as the Queen's Palace, the former Prime Ministers house and houses of Nobles along with several churches and both Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals.

Another of Antananarivo's popular attractions is the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga. This is both a royal residential city and burial site that also includes several sacred shrines. The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga has been one of the most visited pilgramige and religious sites in Madagascar for over 500 years. It is common for pilgrims to be at the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga performing rituals and worshipping at any time of the year.

As Madagascar is teeming with various species of wildlife, one of the most visited attractions in Antananarivo is the Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve. This Nature Reserve is home to many endangered species such as lemurs, reptiles, amphibians and birds. The terrain varys throughout the Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve. The Nature Reserve is also a popular palce to go canoeing down the Manambolo River.
