General Information about Lilongwe

Lilongwe is the capital and one of the largest cities of Malawi in Africa. Lilongwe is situated close to the centre of the nation on the Lilongwe River. The city of Lilongwe is divided into the Old Town and the new Modern Quarter. Today Lilongwe is home to around 250,000 people and is also the political centre of Malawi.

Lilongwe is known as the Garden City as it is surrounded by many gardens, trees and parklands as well as modern architecture. The Old Town of Lilongwe is built around one of the cities former villages and has a very old world charm and feel that is popular with visitors. Also popular in Lilongwe is Capital Hill, the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary and the Tobacco Auction Floor.

The Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary is located in the centre of the city of Lilongwe and is one of the most popular attractions and nature reserves in Malawi. Rare plants, wildflowers and wildlife are found in the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, which is also an environmental education centre.
