General Information about Maldives

The Maldives is an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean that consists of 1,190 islets that are grouped into 26 atolls. Evenso, the Maldives are one of the smallest countries in the world with around 300,000 people living there. Male is the capital city of the Maldives and is situated on the southern coastline of the Kaafu Atoll. Maldivian Dhivehi is the language spoken in the Maldives and is a dialect of Sinhala. English is spoken by most government officials in the Maldives. Sunni Muslim is the official religion of the Maldives.

The most popular activity to do in the Maldives are swimming, snorkelling and scuba-diving. There are many fantastic spots to choose from including The Banana Reef and the wreck of the Maldive Victory. The Banana Reef is located on the eastern side of the North Male Atoll and is a protected marine area. The Banana Reef is an excellent place for snorkelling and there are plenty of sharks, coral and reef fish to see.

The wreck of the Maldive Victory is found on the western side of the island Hulule and can be a challenging dive due to the currents. The ship is almost intact and is home to new coral, fish and other reef life.

Maldives has a typical tropical climate although the weather is greatly effected by the equator resulting in monsoonal type weather. Maldives has two main seasons of a wet and dry season. May until August is the first wet season which is brought on by the southwest monsoon while December through to March is dry with dry winds as a result of the northeast monsoon. Visiting during April and October should be taken with care as these are the worst months to visit, with strong winds and storms. The annual temperature of the Maldives sits around 30 degrees and rarely goes below 25 degrees.

The Maldives is a beautiful country to visit with a flat country side and plenty of white sandy beaches. The largest island of the Maldives is set on the Gnaviyani Atoll known as Fuvammulah but more commonly known as Fua Mulaku mainly by the locals. Because Maldives country side is extremly flat the highest point is only 2.4 metres high. To this day the highest point of Maldives remains unnamed and can be found on the Vilingili Island within the Addu Atoll.

The service industry provides over 77 percent of the economy while employing over 60 percent of the population. The fishing industry in Maldives is the second most important contributor to the economy while the agricultural industry only accounts for approximately 7 percent of the economy. The Maldives mainly exports to Thailand, the UK and Sri Lanka with its main export being fish. The official currency of the Maldives is the Rufiyaa.
