Bamako

General Information about Bamako

Bamako is the capital and largest city of Mali in Africa and is situated Niger River in the south of Mali. Although Bamako has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era, it was officially discovered in the 17th century by Seribadian Niare and Soumba Coulibaliy. Since then, the region has been occupied by French troops and been the capital of French Sudan. Today Bamako is home to over 1.69 million people and is the 6th fastest growing city in the world.

There are many places of interest in Bamako including the Bamako Grand Mosque, Pont du Roi Fahd, Mali National Museum, Muso Kunda Museum, Bamako Zoo, Point G Hill and the Bamako Botanical Gardens.

The Bamako Grand Mosque is the prominent place of worship for the Muslim community in Bamako. It is also one of the cities major attractions that is easily accessible and one of the best examples of architectural skills. The Bamako Grand Mosque takes some time to explore completely, as well as it's minarets which can be seen from the hill of knowledge. The Bamako Grand Mosque also offers beautiful views of the Niger River and a very calm environment.

The Mali National Museum is one of the major attractions in Bamako and is Mali's main anthropological and archaeological museum. This museum was opened in 1953 under the French reign and was orignally named the Sudanese Museum. Since 1960 the current name has been in place. The Mali National Museum displays various collections of musical instruments, ritual objects and dress belonging to Mali's many ethnic groups.
