Nouakchott

General Information about Nouakchott

Nouakchott, translated from the Berber meaning of 'The place of the Winds' is the capital and largest city of Mauritania in Africa. Nouakchott is situated on the coast of the North Atlantic Ocean and is one of the largest cities in the Sahara Desert. It is thought that the Berber Muslim Almoravids originally came from Nouakchott which was a tiny village until 1958. Nowadays, Nouakchott is home to over 900,000 people.

The main attractions in Nouakchott include the Nouakchott Museum and the Nouakchott Silver Market along with many other marets and beaches. Nouakchott also houses the National Library and the National Archives as well as the Franco-Mauritanian Cultural Centre and the Stade Olympic which hosts soccer matches.

Also in Nouakchott is Port de Peche where the fishermen return to each evening with fresh fish that are then sold at this markets here. Other places of interest in Nouakchott include the Ksar, the National Office of Carpet Shops, Independence Avenue which the Presidential Palace is found, and the Mosque Saudique which features ten magnificent domes.

Nouakchott is also well known as the best location in Africa to purchase native Saharan meteorites.
