Port LouisGeneral Information about Port LouisPort Louis is the capital and largest city of Mauritius, an African island in the Indian Ocean. Port Louis is situated in the central north of the island and is also the main port of Mauritius. Port Louis was discovered by the French in the 1730's and was named in honour of King Louis XV. Today Port Louis is a busy commercial and business centre that has a population of over 148,000 people.
Port Louis has many interesting sites and attractions such as Fort Adelaide, or La Citadelle, the Champ de Mars Racecourse, the Les Casernes Police Barracks, the Port Louis Waterfront, the Mauritius Natural History Museum, the Jummah Mosque and the Chinese Burial Ground.
The Jummah Mosque is situated in the city centre of Port Louis on the Royal Road. The Jummah Mosque started as the Mosquee des Arabes after a group of weathly Muslims purchased the land in 1852 and transformed one of the houses into a prayer hall. One year later this became the Mosquee des Arabes which was then extended in 1878 to become the Jummah Mosque.
The Mauritius Natural History Museum located in the centre of Port Louis is one of the city's major attractions. This museum is the oldest in Mauritius and originated from the Desjardines Museum which was opened in the 1840's. The most famous exhibit in the Mauritius Natural History Museum is the complete skeleton of the Dodo which became extinct in the late 17th century.
