Mamoudzou

General Information about Mamoudzou

Mamoudzou is the capital and largest city in Mayotte which is a French overseas collectivity which is located in the Indian Ocean. Mamoudzou replaced Dzaoudzi as the capital city of Mayotte in 1977 and is located on the largest of Mayotte's islands, Grande-Terre, or Mahore. Mamoudzou is the most populated municipality of Mayotte and estimated to be home to over 54,000 people.

There are many beaches and mountains in Mamoudzou that are popular places to visit such as Plage Moya, Soulou Beach, Ngoudja Beach, Mout Mtsapere and Mount Choungui. Another of Mamoudzou's attraction is the Cascade de Soulou, a waterfall not far from the Soulou Beach.

Many physical activities are popular in Mamoudzou, especially hiking. Hiking to the summit of Mount Choungi is very common as there are great panoramic views of the city from the peak of the mountain.

Swimming and diving at many of Mamoudzou's beaches is also popular as the area here is considered the world's largest lagoon. Also, the areas surrounding Mamoudzou are frequently visited by humpback whales and their calves during August and September. The southern beaches is also where sea turtles come to lay their eggs.
