Cancun

General Information about Cancun

One of the most world-famous tourist destinations and resort cities in the world, Cancun, is located in the east of Mexico, in the state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan Peninsula. The city is home to some of the most famous and beautiful beaches on the world as it is situated on the Caribbean Coast. Cancun began as a planned tourism town in 1967, and had only three residents by 1970. Today the city is home to more than 573,000 people and is serviced by an average of 190 national and international flights per day.

Apart from resting on the golden beaches of Cancun or enjoying Spring Break, the city is also a popular destination for those wishing to see Mayan archaeological sites. Although relatively small, there are many of thses sites in and around Cancun such as Ruinas El Ray, El Meco, Coba, Muyil and Tulum. In the neighbouring state Yucatan lies the Chichen Itza archaeological site which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

El Rey is the largest archeaological site in Cancun and is believed to have been built around 300 AD. These Mayan ruins are mainly of Puuc style and consist of two plazas, a pyramid shaped palace with a ceremonial platform and a small temple. It is unknown what the area was called when it was inhabited. El Rey was named so in the 20th century in honour of a sculpture which was discovered on the site. This sculpture, which is currently housed in the El Museo de Arqueologia, depicts a human face and what is believed to be the dress of early Mayan Kings or those of high importance. Other finds a the El Rey site including more than 50 tombs.

Another of the most visited sites in the area is Xcaret, which triples as a Mayan archeaological site, ecopark and resort. Xcaret is situated on 200 acres and is believed to have been at it's peak inhabitancy between 1400 and 1517 AD. The top things to do in Xcaret are visiting the scenic tower, doing the underground river swim, opportunities to swim with dolphins and exploring the ancient Mayan ruins.
