Myanmar

General Information about Myanmar

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is the largest country in southeast Asia. Myanmar is bordered by China, Laos, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea in the Indian Ocean. Myanmar has a population of just over 47,300,000 people. 89% of the population are Buddists. The language spoken in Myanmar is Burmese but some minority ethnic groups use their own languages also.

Until 2005, Myanmar's capital city was Rangoon situated on the southern Myanmar coastline but the governemt has now named Naypyidaw as Myanmar's capital city. Kyaiktiyo is home to one of Myanmar's most sacred Buddist sites- Kyaiktiyo or Golden Rock which is located on a cliff of Mount Kyaikto. The Ngapali Beach is a popular place to visit. It is situated on the Bay of Bengal coast and is a 3kn stretch of sandy white beach with palm trees and turquoise waters.

The climate of Myanmar can be described as a tropical monsoon climate because of its location to the monsoon region of Asia. There are three main seasons in Myanmar with the summer months beginning in March through to May with average temperatures of 30 degrees with some days going as high as 35 degrees. The rainy southwest monsoon season begins in May and lasts up until October with some areas receiving as much as 200 inches. Winter begins in November ending ing February where temperatures can go well below freezing, sometimes as low as minus 32 degrees. In the northern mountains snow can stick around for as long a two months.

One of the largest countries in mainland Southeast Asia Myanmar covers a total of 378,500 square metres with a massive coastline of 1,930 kilometres. Myanmar which was also called Burma was originally a colony of the United Kingdom but announced its independence back in 1948. It was then that Burma changed its name to the Union of Burma. But it wasn't until 1989 that the name Myanmar came into place and is now officially known as the Union of Myanmar. The highest point in Myanmar is Hkakabo Razi which rises to over 5,881 metre and is entirely mountainous. The terrain of Myanmar is full of rugged highlands with cenral lowlands.

Myanmar has one of the poorest countries in the world despite its being rich in natural resources. This is mainly due to poor mismanagement and inefficient economic policies. Myanmar economy wasn't always so bad and was once the world's largest exporter of rice as well as exporting over 75 percent of the worlds teak, which is a tropical hardwood. Myanmar's economy started to deteriate when it came into the control of Prime Minister U Nu after it became independent the United Kingdom. The agricultural industry in Myanmar is the largest support to the economy contributing over 56 percent while employing over 70 percent. The unemployment rate is not too bat at 5 percent while 25 percent of the population live below the poverty line. The official currency of Myanmar is the Kyat.
