Yangon

General Information about Yangon

Myanmar's largest city Yangon is located in the south of the nation on the confluence of the Yangon River and the Bago River. Yangon is situated 578 kilometres south of Myanmar's capital city Naypyidaw (also known as Mandalay) and 30 kilometres north of the Gulf of Martaban. Naypyodaw replaced Yangon as capital of Myanmar (also known as Burma) in March 2006, however the city is still the most important commercial city in the nation and is home to more than 6 million people. Yangon is sometimes known as Rangoon.

Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar is located in Yangon on top of Singuttara Hill. Legend says that the pagoda has been there for more than 2,500 years, but archeaologists believe the stupa wasn't built until the 6th century AD. The Buddhist Monks believe this to be untrue, they say the stupa was built before Lord Buddha's death in 486 BC. Shewedagon Pagoda houses relics of the past four Buddha's- the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Konagamana, a piece of Kassapa's robe and eight hairs of Lord Gautama Buddha. The Shewedagon Pagoda is one of the most famous and most visited sites in Yangon.

There are also many museums in the city, such as the National Museum of Myanmar, Defence Services Museum, Bogyoke Aung San Museum and Myanmar Gems Museum. The National Museum of Myanmar is the most well known of these and is housed in a 5 storey tall building surrounded by landscaped grounds. The museum features many historic aftifacts, scripts and ornaments of Myanmar as well as artworks and literature from the people of the nation. The National Museum of Myanmar is situated close to the Shewedagon Pagoda.

Another of Yangon's landmarks is Saint Mary's Cathedral, the largest Catholic Cathedral in Myanmar. Constuction of the cathedral started in 1895 and was funded by the Government of India. At that tine Lower Myanmar was part of the British Indian province. Saint Mary's Cathedral was completed in 1899 and has withstood the 1930 earthquake of Yangon and World War II. The grounds of the cathedral contains the Basic Education High School No. 6 which is locally known as Saint Paul's High School. Despite it's name and location, the school has no affiliation with the Catholic Church.
