General Information about Swakopmund

Swakopmund, meaning 'Mouth of the Swakop' in German, is one of the largest cities in Namibia. It is located in the north west of the nation on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, and lies about 280 kilometres west of Namibia's capital city Windhoek. With a population of less than 30,000 people, Swakopmund is a popular resort town for those on holidays. During the summer months the city has a cooler temperature than most Namibian cities so the administrative duties are performed here instead of Windhoek. Swakopmund has become world famous as the birthplace of actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's first natural child Shiloh who was born in May 2006.

There are numerous attractions in Swakopmund. Some of the most well known include the Old German Cemetery, African Cemetery, Alte Kaserne, Kristall Galerie, Living Desert Snake Park, Prinzessin Rupprecht Heim, The Mole and the Swakopmund Museum.

Many historical cemeteries lie along the Swakop River, just south east of the centre of Swakopmund city. The Old German Cemetery is one of the most visited cemeteries in this area and dates from the colonial era. There are many tombstones which tell of the lives of those who lived here. Today these are maintained by the local families of Swakopmund.

At the foot of Swakopmund's lighthouse is the Swakopmund Museum which is housed in the old harbour warehouse which was destroyed in 1914. The museum features many exhibits and gives a great insight into the lives of the people of Swakopmund and Namibia. There are displays on the history and ethnology of the country including information on local flora and fauna, a display on the Rossing Mine and the interior of a reconstructed colonial home.
