Chitwan

General Information about Chitwan

The Chitwan District is one of the 75 districts of Nepal and one of the most popular to visit. The main town of the district is Narayangarh which is situated just less than 90 kilometres west of Nepal's capital city Kathmandu. The Chitwan District is located at the foot of the Himalaya's and is the best place in Napal to see the nation's natural flora and fauna. There are about 472,500 people living in the Chitwan District.

The main reason tourists come to the Chitwan District is to visit the Chitwan National Park, formerly known as the Royal Chitwan National Park. This park was established in 1973 and is the oldest national park in Nepal. The park covers 932 square kilometres of land and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Many people believe the park to be one of the best in Asia as it contains a Gharial Breeding Centre for Crocodiles, the Bikram Baba religious site, Chitwan Hatisar Elephant Breeding Centre and Bishajaro Tal - the 20,000 lakes.

The most popular way to experience Chitwan National Park is by elephant safari. The most commonly seen animals in the park include elephants, crocodiles, rhinos, deer, monkeys and birds. Sometimes tigers and leopards are spotted.
