Pokhara

General Information about Pokhara

Located 200 kilometres north west of Kathmandu and 75 kilometres north of the Chitwan District is Pokhara, one of Nepal's most popular tourist destinations. The city is the third largest of Nepal with a population of about 200,000 people. Pokhara is situated at the foot of the Himalayla's and is known as the Gateway to the Himalaya's. It is also the starting point for treks which go to Jomsom and the Annapurna area. Pokhara has cleaner air and a pleasanter climate than nearby Kathmandu.

There are many things to see and do in Pokhara that will keep you busy. Some of the most popular and well known places to visit include Bhimsen Temple, Devi's Falls, the World Peace Pagoda, Karma Dubgyu Chokhorling Monastery, International Mountain Museum, Bindhya Basini Temple, Natural History Museum, Sarangkot and the Pokhara Regional Museum.

Devi's Falls is the most well known site in Pokhara. It is also known as Patale Chhango- or Hell's Falls, and David's Falls. The falls are located 2 kilometres south of where Lake Phewa drains into the Pardi Khola. Here the river goes over Devi's Falls and disappears into a sinkhole. The name 'David's Falls' came from the name of a Swiss tourist who was sucked into a whirlpool then disappeared into the sinkhole.

Pokhara's World Peace Pagoda is a recent addition to the city that is located on a hill overlooking Phewa Tal. The pagoda was constructed by Buddhist monks who were part of the Japanese Nipponzan Myohoji organisation and stands out as it is bright white. There are three paths you can take to reach the pagoda. At the pagoda there are many small cafes and some souvenir stalls. The World Peace Pagoda is a particularly good place to watch the sun set over Pokhara.
