General Information about Sint Eustatius

Sint Eustatius is an island in the Netherland Antilles located in the east of the Caribbean Sea. Sint Eustatius is a dependency of the Kingdom Of The Netherlands and is also known as Saint Eustatius or Statia. Sint Eustatius has an estimated population of 2,300 people with only around 1,000 people living in it's capital city Oranjestad.

The official language spoken in Sint Eustatius is Dutch but Papiamento is commonly spoken by the locals. English and Spanish are also widely understood. The majority of Sint Eustatius' population are of Protestant religion with a minority following of Roman Catholicism. During the 1630's Sint Eustatius was the centre of contraband trade with the America's then in the 18th century Sint Eustatius was one of the most popular places of trade for pirates and smugglers.

Fort Oranje, built by the French in 1629, is a popular tourist spot in Sint Eustatius. It is situated in the centre of Oranjestad and is a completely intact fortress that also offeres great views of the water. Also in Sint Eustatius is the Synagogue Honen Dalim, the second-oldest Synagogue in the New World. An ancient Jewish Cemetary is connected to the Synagogue.

Sint Eustatius enjoys a typical tropical climate with pleasant conditions all year round with averages of up to 27 degrees. Sint Eustatius is set in the trade wind belt which assists in lowering the humidity levels. If you are planning on visiting between the months of July and October then care should be taken as this is hurricane season. Sint Eustatius recieves more rainfall than the other islands of the Netherlands Antilles with as much as 43 inches of rain falling each year.

Sint Eustatius which is one of five islands of the Netherlands Antilles has a total area of 21 square kilometres. Sint Eustatius which is of volcanic origin is often thought to be shaped like a saddle. The highest point of Sint Eustatius is known as The Quill which means pit or hole and rises to over 601 metres. Other mountains of Sint Eustatius are Signal Hill or Little Mountain and Boven Mountain which can be found on the north western side of the island.
