GranadaGeneral Information about GranadaNicaragua's fourth most populated city is Granada, which is also the oldest city in Cental America which was founded by Europeans. The city is siatuated on the north western shore of Lake Cocibolca which lies about 50 kilometres south east of Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. Granada is one of Nicaragua's most historically important cities and has earned the nickname "Gran Sultana del Gran Lago", meaning the Great Sultan of the Great Lake.
Of the many attractions and places of interest in Granada, the city is most famous for it's volcanoes and lakes, such as Masaya Volcano, Momotombo Volcano, Lake Cocibolca and Las Isletas. There are also a number of churches and religious sites which are popular to visit including Cementerio de Granada, Iglesia de la Merced and Iglesia San Francisco.
Lake Cocibola, or Lake Nicaragua, is the 10th largest fresh water lake in the world, and the only one of it's kind to be home to fresh water sharks which have been named Nicaragua Sharks. During the day this is a very popular site for both locals and tourists to visit as is it usually a quiet spot with a nice breeze. There are also vendors which pass through the area of Lake Cocibola and sell varying kinds of food.
Often referred to as the most beautiful church in Granada is the Iglesia de la Merced. This church was originally constructed in 1539 but was razed by pirates in 1655. The Baroque facade of the landmark was built in the early 1780's, though damaged in 1854. The church was last restored, complete with it's exquisite interior in 1862. The Iglesia de la Merced is often visited by Catholics wishing to see the image of the Virgen de Fatima, though many non-religous visitors also come here to climb the bell tower.
