The Contra War in the 1980's destroyed most of the counties infrastructure. Since then Nicaragua has progressed toward macroeconomic stability. Nicaragua has a unemployment rate of just 3.8 percent while 46.5 percent of the population are underemployed. The agricultural industry provides over 29 percent of the economy with the main produces being coffee, bananas, sugarcane, cotton and rice. The main exports are coffee, beef, prawns, lobster, tobacco, sugar, gold and peanuts. The service industry provides over 56 percent of the economy while employing over half of the population.
