Niamey

General Information about Niamey

Niamey is the capital and largest city of Niger in Africa and is located on the Niger River in the south west of the country. It is believed that Niamey was discovered in the 18th century but was not an important area of Niger until the French developed it into a colonial post in the 1890's. Niamey has been the capital city of Niger since 1926 and is now home to over 674,900 people.

Niamey has many attractions and places of interest such as the Niger National Museum, a zoo, the Tree of Tenere, many cultural and craft centres and markets including the popular Grand Marche.

The Musee National du Niger, of the Niger National Museum, is one of the most visited places by tourists and includes a small zoo. The Niger National Museum contains many displays such as model houses and the Niger culture. Also on the museum grounds is an artisan market where many local and traditional handicrafts can be purchased.

The Grande Marche is the largest of Niamey's five markets. Here there are various items for sale including jewellery, shoes, pottery and traditional outfits. Also nearby is the Petite Marche which mainly has food and household items for sale. Another of Niamey's interesting sites is the Tree of Tenere which was once considered the most isolated tree in the world as the closest other tree is over 400 kilometres away.
