General Information about North Korea

North Korea is located in eastern Asia and is bordered by China on the north, Russia on the northeast and South Korea on the South. North Korea has two coastlines. To the east is the Sea of Japan and to the west Korea Bay and the Yellow Sea. North Korea has a population of around 23,300,000 people who speak Korean. North Koreans traditionally follow religion such as Buddhist and Confucianist, however free religious activities are no longer in existance. Instead there are government-funded religios groups used to give the illusion of freedom of religion. North Korea's capital city is Pyongyang.

Paekdusan, an extinct volcano, is one of the most popular places to visit in North Korea and is very sacred to the Koreans who live here. This is beacuase of Korean mythology that says the 'Son of the Lord of Heaven' descended here and formed the first Korean kingdom. The Chonji (Lake of Heaven) lies at Paekdusan's summit and is one of the deepest alpine lakes in the world.

The terrain of North Korea is mostly hills as well as mountainous with many narrow valleys, with coastal plains along the west.
