General Information about Northern Mariana Islands

The Northern Mariana Islands is a commonwealth in political union with the United States of America that is comprised of 15 islands that are located in the South Pacific, about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philipines. The Northern Mariana Islands have a population of over 80,300 people and has the highest female to male gender ratio in the world with 76 men to every 100 women. The official languages spoken in the Northern Mariana Islands are English and Chamorro. Other Philipine languages and Chinese are also spoken. The majority of the population are Roman Catholic or another form of Christian but traditional taboos and beliefs are still sometimes apparent. Saipan is the largest island in the Northern Mariana Islands chain and is also the capital city of the nation. Saipan is home to over 62,000 people, a large majority of the nations total population.

The Obyan Beach features a large concrete bunker left from World War II as well as the remnants of 8 latte stones that date from 1500 BC. The actual beach here is wonderful with white sand and clear calm waters and is a great place to snorkel. Saipan's best place for snorkelling is at the MaƱagaha Island which is an old reef patch that was naturally lifted above sea level more than 10,000 years ago. The waters that surround MaƱagaha Island are clear and has an abundance of coral and colourful tropical fish. Another interesting places to visit on the North Mariana Islands is Banadero, the last command post of the Japanese Imperial Army, which contains cannons and other military artifacts.

The climate of the Northern Mariana Islands is typically tropical with average temperatures ranging between 26-28 degrees. The Northern Mariana Islands does experience some trade winds that are common to many of the islands in the North Pacific. Visiting during July and November should be taken with care as this is the rainy season although rainfall is not as heavy in the northern parts of the island. Also during this period typhoons are common with an annual average rainfall of 70 inches. Visiting during December and June is ideal as this is the dry period which mild pleasant weather conditions.

The Northern Mariana Islands which is officially known as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands or CNMI for short can be found in North Pacific Ocean. The Northern Mariana Islands has area of just 477 square kilometres with an extensive coastline of 1,482 kilometres which includes the islands Saipan, Rota, Tinian. The terrain of the southern islands of Northern Mariana Islands is filled with limestone with level terraces as well as fringing coral reefs. The northern islands are mainly volcanic. The highest peak of the Northern Mariana Islands rises to over 965 metres and is known as Agrihan. Agrihan is a tall conical volcano which is commonly known as a stratovolcano and makes up an entire island. Agrihan goes below sea level as far as 4,000 metres and covers an area of 7.31 square kilometres. There are also other volcano's to be found on the Mariana Islands which are still active today. These islands are Anatahan, Pagan, and Agrihan. 2

The tourism industry is now the main source of income for the Northern Mariana Islands and employs approximately half of the population. Visitors to the island has increased over the years but the most popular visitor to the island is the Japanese. The Northern Mariana Islands receives much financial support from the US, but has decreased its support over the years due to the local government generated significant growth. The most important industry is Northern Mariana's textiles production with over 17,500 people being employed. The main agricultural produces are coconuts, fruits, vegetables, and cattle. The official currency of the Northern Mariana Islands is the American Dollar.
