There is also a minority following of Hindu. Oman's capital and largest city Muscat is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Oman and is home to more than 600,000 people.
The Grand Mosque in Muscat is one of the Islamic architectural highlights of the city and the third largest mosque in the world. Sultan Qaboos gave this mosque to his country to celebrate the 30th year of his reign. The largest Persian carpet in the world is here and took 600 women 4 years to weave. Oman has a 1,700km coastline and it's wonderful beaches attract many visitors. Some of the more popular beaches include Bandar Jissah and As-Sawadi. April through to October are the summer months with hot and humid days. Temperature are not as severe in some parts with the average temperature in Muscat reaching up to 33 degrees. The region of Dhofar experiences more south west monsoon type conditions with rainfalling most between June and October with as much as 25 inches of rain falling. Winters in Oman are more mild with temperatures averaging between 15 and 23 degrees. The service industry is the most important contributor to the economy and is closely followed by the industry sector on 38 percent. The main industry trades are crude oil production and refining, natural and liquefied natural gas production, construction, copper, steel, chemicals and optic fibre.
