Pakistan is located in southern Asia and is bordered by Iran and Afghanistan to the west, China to the far northeast, India to the east and the Arabian Sea to the south. Pakistan has a population of over 162,419,900 people making it the sixth most populated country in the world.


Pakistan has the second largest Muslim population in the world with 97% of the nations inhabitants following the Sunni Muslim or Shi'a Muslim religions. Urdu is the official language of Pakistan. English is officially spoken by government or business ministries as well as those who come from upper class families or who have had higher education. Pakistanis also speak their local dialects, the most common of these being Punjabi. Pakistan's capital city Islamabad is located in the countries north. Pakistan can be divided into three major geographic zones, the northern highlands, the Indus River Plain and the Balochistan Plateau. The Indus River is the longest river in Pakistan and is also the most important by providing key water resources for the economy. As well as being the longest river in Pakistan it is also the third largest river in the Indian subcontinent and flows for over 3,200 kilometres.

The second highest mountain in the world can be found in Pakistan which is known as K2. K2 which is the highest mountain in Pakistan measures for over 8,611 metres and can be found in the Karakoram segment which is a mountain range between Pakistan, China and India in the Himalayan range. The lowest point in Pakistan is the Indian Ocean at zero metres. Much of the terrain in the north and northwest is mountainous and arctic in the north. The east is more flat while the west contains balochistan plateaus.
