General Information about Philippines

The Philippines is found in southeast Asia and consists of over 7,100 islands that lie between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea in the Pacific Ocean. The Philippines has a population of about 91,077,287 people making it the 12th most populated country in the world. Filipino and English are the official languages spoken in the Philippines. 80% of the Filipino population follow Roman-Catholic beliefs.

There are 79 provinces spread over the 7,107 odd islands that are the Philippines. These are divided into three main island groups; Luzon in the north, Visayas in the centre and Mindanao in the south. Luzon is home to the Philippines capital city Manila.

Over 14 million people live in Manila, the heart of the Philippines. Here there are many popular places to visit including Casa Manila and the Intramuros fortress that was bombed in World War II by the US. The Chocolate Hills are a popular mountain to visit in the Philippines. According to local legends, they were either formed by the tears of a heartbroken giant or are debris from a battle between two giants.

The Philippines has a monsoonal tropical climate with three main season as well as constant sea breezes. The seasons in the Philippines are known as Tag-init which is the hot season lasting from March until May. The rainy season is called Tag-ulan and occurs between June and November. Visiting during June and December should be taken with care as this is the typhoon season also known as tropical cyclones. Lastly the Taglamig is the cold season which begins in December ending in February. These cyclones are heaviest in Samar, Leyte, south central Luzon, and the Batan Islands. Monsoons in the southwest occur between May and October and is also known as the Habagat. Temperatures range between 25 and 35 degrees with some areas getting as high as 40 degrees.

Officially known as the Republic of the Philippines the terrain is mainly mountainous with narrow to extensive coastal lowlands. The mountains in the Philippines were originaly volcanic as well as being covered in tropical rainforests. The islands of the Philippines are divided into three groups of Luzon which is home to the capital Manila, Visayas, and Mindanae. The highest peak in the Philippines is Mount Apo which rises to over 2,954 metres and can be found on the island of Mindanao overlooking Davao City. Mount Apo means master or grandfather and is flat topped with three peaks. The lowest point in the Philippines is the Philippine Sea at zero metres.

The Philippines has one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia although this is not evenly distributed. The agricultural industry in the Philippines is at a low of 14 percent while it employs over 36 percent of the population. The service industry accounts for over 54 percent of the economy and is closely followed by the industry sector. The main exports of the Philippines are semiconductors and electronic products, trnsport equipment, garments, copper products, petroleum products, and coconut oil. Over forty percent of the population in the Philippines live below the poverty line with an unemployment rate of 7.9 percent. The official currency of the Philippines is Philippine Peso.
