Dakar

General Information about Dakar

Dakar is the capital and largest city of Sengal in Africa. Dakar is situated on the Cape Verde Peninsula in the west of Senegal and borders the Atlantic Ocean. Original settlers arrived on the Cape Verde Peninsula in the 15th century and Dakar became the capital city of French West Africa in 1902, before being proclaimed the capital of Senegal in 1960. Dakar is the economic and business centre of Senegal and is now home to over one million people, including 20,000 French expatriates.

Dakar has many attractions and places of interest such as the Dakar Grand Mosque, Ile de Goree, the IFAN Museum of West African Culture, the Soumbedioune Beach and Hann Park which features the Senegal Zoo. Dakar is also world famous as the finishing point of the Dakar Rally, an annual off-road race.

The Dakar Grand Mosque or Grande Mosquee de Dakar which is situated on Allee Pape Gueye Fall is one of the most important religious buildings in Dakar. The Grand Mosque of Dakar is styled similarly to the Mosquee Mohammad V in Casablanca, Morocco and was designed by French and Moroccan architects. Hassan II, former King of Morocca and former President of Senegal Leopold Sedar Senghor opened the Grand Mosque of Dakar in 1964.

Ile de Goree, or Goree Island is a commune of Dakar located one kilometre away from the main harbour of Dakar. Ile de Goree is world famous as it was once where the African slaves were deported to the Americas. The most famous landmark of Ile de Goree is the Maison de Esclaves, or House of Slaves. Built in 1876, the Maison de Esclaves is the last remaining slave trading house from the 18th century.
