VictoriaGeneral Information about VictoriaVictoria is the capital and largest city of Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of eastern Africa. Victoria is situated on the northeastern side of Seychelles' largest island Mahe and was originally settled by the French in 1778. Victoria was eventually named after Queen Victoria and is now home to almost 25,000 people.
Victoria features many places of interest and attractions such as the Victoria National Museum of History, a Courthouse, the Victoria Botanical Gardens, the Victoria Natural History Museum, the Selwyn-Clarke Market and a clocktower modelled on Big Ben in London. Also in Victoria are Roman Catholic and Anglican cathedrals and the Capuchin House, a seminary for priests.
The Natural History Museum in Victoria is one of the most visited attractions in the city and has many specimens of living and extinct plants and animals in Seychelles. There are also other historial artefacts including pieces of a 16 century shipwreck. The main feature of the museum is the original 'stone of possession by which the French claimed rights to Seycheles in 1756.
St Paul's Cathedral which was built on the site of the first church in Seychelles is an excellent example of a simple colonial cathedral.
