General Information about Cape Town

Cape Town is the legislative capital and third largest city in South Africa. Cape Town is situated on the northern end of the Cape Peninsula which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. In 1652, Cape Town was the site of the first European settlement in South Africa after the arrival of Jan van Riebeek. Today Cape Town is one of the most popular touist destinations in South Africa and is home to over 2.8 million people.

There are many popular attractions and places of interest in Cape Town such as Table Mountain, Two Oceans Aquarium, the Twelve Apostles, the Castle of Good Hope, the Presidential house, St George's Anglican Cathedral, St Mary's Catholic Cathedral and various museums including the District Six Museum and the South African Museum which features an adjoining planetarium.

Table Mountain, raised 1087 metres above sea level, is Cape Town's greatest landmark and one of the most famous in the whole of South Africa. Table Mountain features a three kilometre flat plateau that is surrounded by steep cliffs including Devil's Peak and Lion's Head. The highest point on Table Mountain is marked by Maclear's Beacon, a stone carin built by Sir Thomas Maclear for a trigonomical survey in 1865. This stands at 1,086 metres above sea level.

The Castle of Good Hope is another of Cape Town's historial features that was built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company, also known as VOC. The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest building in South Africa and replaced an older fort that had previously been on the site and made of timber and clay. In 1682 a gated entry was added then in 1684 a bell tower was also constructed. The Castle also included a church, bakery, shops, cells and living quarters inside. The Castle of Good Hope was declared a national monument in 1936.
