DurbanGeneral Information about DurbanForming the major part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality is Durban, the third largest city in South Africa. It is also the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province of the nation. Located on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Durban is one of the most famous ports in South Africa and is situated 637 kilometres south east of the city Pretoria. Durban is one of the most popular places to holiday in South Africa due to it's warm subtropical climate and abundance of beaches. The city has a population of over 3.5 million people but because it is such a large area, it also has one of the lowest population densities in South Africa.
As it is such a large city, Durban has attractions that will appeal to everyone. There are many religious sites such as the Juma Mosque, Temple of Understanding, Church Square and Alayam Hindu Temple. Other popular attractions in the city include uShaka Marine World, City Hall, KwaMuhle Museum, Phanzi Museum, Time-Warp Surf Museum and the Natural Science Museum.
Situated just outside the centre of Durban is the Temple of Understanding which is the largest Hare Krishna temple in the southern hemisphere. The building is one of the most unique in the city, featuring a silver roof and gold tipped steeples. The interior of the temple is a beautiful mix of marble, pillars, mirrors, murals and paintings. The Temple of Understanding also houses a vegetarian restaurant which is open to the public.
uShaka Marine World is one of the most popular and well known attractions in Durban, as well as being the fifth largest aquarium in the world. This amusement park is comprised of five areas- uShaka Sea World, uShaka The Phantom Ship, uShaka Wet 'n' Wild, uShaka Beach and uShaka Village Walk. uShaka Sea World is the main attraction of the park and features a wide variety of marine life, housed in 32 seperate areas which take up a total of 17,500 cubic metres of water.
