General Information about Port Elizabeth

Founded in 1820 to house British settlers, Port Elizabeth is today home to more than 737,000 people. The city is located on the southern coast of South Africa about 770 kilometres east of Cape Town and 770 kilometres west of Durban. Often shortened to PE, Port Elizabeth has been nicknamed 'The Friendly City' and 'The Windy City' and stretches 16 kilometres along Algoa Bay. Port Elizabeth is the fifth largest city in South Africa and is the end of the Garden Route which runs along the coast of the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

As one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Africa, Port Elizabeth is teeming with attractions and things to do. Some of the most well known places to visit include Donkin Reserve, Bayworld, South End Museum, Campanile, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, St George's Park, Addo Elephant National Park and the Apple Express.

Housed in two buildings at the entrence to St George's Park is the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum. This art museum features permanent collections of paintings and other artworks done by South African artists, as well as older Eastern and British pieces. The Nelson Mandela Art Museum also features many tempoary traveling exhibitions, workshops and other activities throughout the year.

Just behind the city centre is the Donkin Reserve, named after Sir Rufane Donkin former governor of Cape Province. Donkin named the city below after his wife Elizabeth Donkin and had a pyramid built in the reserve as a memorial to her. The reserve is a quiet spot in which offers great views of the Port Elizabeth bay area. The Donkin Reserve also houses the Port Elizabeth Opera House which is the oldest opera house in South Africa.
