Stellenbosch

General Information about Stellenbosch

After Cape Town, Stellenbosch is the oldest European settlement in the Western Cape Province. Stellenbosch is situated about 50 kilometres east of Cape Town and 600 kilometres west of Port Elizabeth, on the bank of the Eerste River. The city was founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, the Governor of Cape Colony who named the city Stellenbosch after himself. The name translates to 'Stel's Forest' in English. In 1833 Stellenbosch had a population of 16,100 people - more than half of these were slvaes. Today the city is home to more than 118,000 people, not including students.

Stellenbosch is primarily a wine city and is definitely the place to go if you enjoy tours of wineries and taste testing. Some of the more well known wineries are Delaire, Blaauwklippen, L'Avenir, Spier and Vergelegen. The city is also home to a number of museums, including the Village Museum, VOC Kruithuis, Toy and Miniature Museum and Sasol Art Museum.

Blaauwklippen is considered by many to be one of the top wineries in the Stellenbosch area. This winery is situated on a 300 year old estate which features several old Dutch buildings. Blaauwklippen is famous for it's red wines, in particular it's Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Also on the site of the winery is a carriage museum which features carriages and various antique vehicles. During the summer the carriages in the museum give carriage rides throughout the estate.

One of the best collections of South Africa's local art can be found in the Sasol Art Museum. This museum houses a selection of unique artworks, done by both famous and emerging artists. The anthropology section of the University of Stellenbosch has also arranged a vast collection of anthropological African treasures in the museum. The exhibitions of the Sasol Art Museum demonstrate the many different social and cultural aspects of Stellenbosch and South Africa and is regarded by many visitors as a must-see.
