Mbabane

General Information about Mbabane

Mbabane is the administrative capital and one of the largest cities of Swaziland. Mbabane is located just northwest of the centre of Swaziland in the Hhohho district on the bank of the Mbabane River. Mbabane became the administrative capital of Swaziland in the early 1900's after the British won the Anglo-Boer War. Mbabane is set among the Dlangeni Hills at an elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level and is home to over 70,000 people.

The main attractions in Mbabane city are the Mall, the New Mall and Allister Miller which is the main street that runs through the city and was named after the first European to be born in Mbabane. The most popular attraction in Mbabane is the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is the pioneering conservation area in Swaziland and is open 24 hours a day. The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary occupies 4,560 hectares and is home to various animal species such as hippos, zebras, rhinos, giraffes, crocodiles, leopards, waterbucks, warthogs and blue wildebeests. There is also an abundance of bird species living within the sanctuary. The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary also offers a range of activities such as horse riding, mountain biking, dives, hiking trails and safaris.
