Entebbe

General Information about Entebbe

With a population of over 90,000 people, Entebbe is one of the most well known cities in Uganda. Entebbe is located on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, which Uganda shares with neighbouring countries Kenya and Tanzania. The city is situated about 30 milometres south of Uganda's capital city Kampala and is most famously known for the Operation Entebbe incident in 1976.

In local Luganda language Entebbe means 'seat'. It is believed Entebbe was named so because the Baganda cheif sat here to judge legal cases. Entebbe first became a British colonial centre in the early 1890's when it was used as a base by Sir Gerald Portal.

The major attractions of Entebbe include the National Zoo, National Botanical Gardens, Sesse Islands and Lake Victoria.
