General Information about Kampala

Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda in Africa and is located in the south of Uganda, on the northern edge of Lake Victoria. The hills and area of Kampala were once the favourite hunting ground by King Mutesa I of Buganda, before becoming the capital of the kingdon in the 1800's. Kampala remained the capital of the Buganda Kingdon before becoming the capital city of Uganda. Today Kampala has a population of over 1.2 million people.

Kampala has many features and places of interest including the seven hills on which the city was reportedly built on, a Baha'i House of Worship, the Kasubi Tombs, The Uganda Museum and the Ruwenzori Mountains National Park. Just east of Kampala is the town of Jinja where the White Nile begins.

The Kasubi Tombs, situated on Kasubi Hill is a highly religious place in Kampala and is also the burial site of 4 former Kings of Buganda. The current King and his representatives also take part in traditional Ganda rituals here]. The Kasubi Tombs were proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

Kampala houses one of the world's seven Baha'i Houses of Worship, The Mother Temple of Africa which is situated on Kikaya Hill and was designed by Charles Mason Remy. Construction on the Mother Temple of Africa begun in 1958 and was dedicated in January 1961. The temple building is over 39 metres tall and has a 100 metre diameter. The dome is over 37 metres high and has a diameter of 13 metres. The foundations of the Mother Temple of Africa go 10 metres underground to protect it from earthquakes.
