General Information about Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital and one of the largest cities of the east Asian country Vietnam. Hanoi is located in the north of Vietnam on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi has been an important city of Vietnam since 1010 when it was the political centre of the nation, which it remained until the Nguyen Dynasty. Hanoi was then the capital of French Indochina between 1887 and 1954 before becoming the capital of North Vietnam. At the conclusion of the Vietnam War in 1976, Hanoi became the capital city of united Vietnam. Today the city has a population of over 3.3 million people.
Seeing as Hanoi has been the capital city of Veitnam for roughly one thousand years, the city has many places of interest and attractions and is the cultural centre of Vietnam. Each dynasty has left it's mark on the city which is seen throughout the city's architecture. Some of the most important buildngs in Hanoi include the Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, Flag Tower of Hanoi, the Grand Opera House, The Presidential Palace, Cathedrale St-Joseph and the Sofitel Metropole hotel.

The One Pillar Pagoda is one of the two most prominent Buddhist temples in all of Vietnam. The One Pillar Pagoda was built by Emperor Ly Thai Tong in 1049 after a peasant woman he married gave birth to his son. Previously, the Emperor had been childless and dreamt of having a baby son. The temple he constructed was similar to the one he saw in his dream.

The Quan Thanh Temple is another popular site to visit in Hanoi. The main attraction of the temple is the statue of Huyen Thien Tran Vo, which weighs 4 thousand kilograms and was made in 1677 or lacquered bronze. The giant toenails of the statue have been polished by Huyen Thien Tran Vo's many adorers for centuries.
