Hoi An

General Information about Hoi An

Hoi An is located in the central south of Vietnam, on the coast of the South China Sea. The city is home to more than 88,000 people and is one of the most popular places to visit in Vietnam. Hoi An was once known as Hai Pho and was an important trading centre for the Vietnamese during the 16th and 17th centuries. The heart of Hoi An is Old Town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

There are many interesting places and attractions to visit in Hoi An such as the Museum of Sa Huynh Culture, the Japanese Covered Bridge, Quan Cong Temple, the Museum of Folk Culture, Phung Hung House, Traditional Theatre, Museum of Trade Ceramics, Tan Ky House and the Phac Hat Pagoda.

The Quan Cong Temple, dedicated to highly esteemed Chinese general Quan Cong, was constructed in 1653 by Chinese immigrants and native Vietnamese people. The statue of Quan Cong, who is worshipped as a symbol of loyalty, justice and sincerity, is located at the rear of the altar and was constructed of paper-mache on a wooden frame. Although the temple has been restored six times since it was built, the original structure has remained the same and resembles the Chinese character Quoc.

The Japanese Covered Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in Hoi An and connects D Tran Phu with D Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. The first bridge constructed here was built in 1590 by the Japanese community of Hoi An so they could be linked with the Chinese quarters on the other side of the river. The original construction of the bridge is still there today, although the bridge was majorly renovated during the late 1980's.
